Procedente de un manual de instrucciones encontrado por el artista, la lectura de ''Cuidado y cría de estatuas'' parte de las complejas instrucciones para el transporte de la Mantis marina (Stomatopoda), una criatura sensible y territorial. Las esculturas que acompañan al texto toman la forma de pilas de cajas de almacenamiento, en las que el artista inserta esculturas decapadas.
Ensamblando escultura y texto para generar un organismo complejo, el proyecto abora como productos perecederos y organismos vivos no son cuerpos inconexos sino mutables. Las formas de vida sensibles requieren cuidado en su manejo, su traslado, su preservación. Este sentimiento de cuidado impregna las obras: los cuerpos tallados de las zanahorias en las cajas descansan dentro de una solución de decapado artesanal; mientras, el manual de instrucciones está realizado por un entusiasta de la mantis marina. Al intercambiar el término "mantis marina" por "estatua", el texto conforma un espacio imaginativo dentro de la oscuridad de las cajas de envío. Tanto en las esculturas como en la lectura somos testigos de cuerpos sensibles conservados en hábitats transitorios.
Kevin Gallagher es un artista estadounidense que trabaja entre Bruselas y Ámsterdam. Entre sus proyectos más recientes se incluye: Deep State en De Ateliers, Amsterdam (2017), Doblar Stluuk Ustics en el Museo Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2016), y square shape faint aroma en Lodos, Ciudad de México (2015).
Originated from a found manual of instructions, the reading, Statue Care and Rearing, is drawn from complex shipping instructions for transporting live mantis shrimp, a sensitive and territorial creature. The corresponding Untitled sculpture takes the form of piled storage boxes, in which the artist inserts pickling sculptures.
Assembling the sculpture and the text as a complex organism, the works address perishable goods and living organisms as no longer dissociated but mutable bodies. Sensitive lifeforms require care in their handling, their movement, their preservation. This feeling of care pervades the works: carved carrot bodies rest in a home-made pickling solution; detailed shipping instructions are composed by a mantis shrimp enthusiast. By transposing the subject of 'mantis shrimp' to 'statue', the text creates an imaginative space within the darkness of the shipping container. In the sculpture and reading, we witness sensitive bodies preserved in transitory habitats.
